Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles

Yannis Kokkos, Director / Institute of Ancient Drama of the Syracuse Festival 2018

Athens Epidaurus Festival
Athens, Greece

Yannis Kokkos brought Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus to the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, focusing on the exiled king’s final quest for sanctuary. As Oedipus approaches the sacred ground of Colonus, the Chorus attempts to banish him, yet Theseus extends mercy, defying territorial fears and personal claims by Creon and Polynices. At the sound of Zeus’ thunder, Oedipus knows his time has come, departing toward his final resting place under Theseus’ guidance. Before leaving the mortal realm behind, he grants Athens his blessing, transforming hardship and hospitality into a profound, enduring legacy.
