Portrait of Yi Haeung

Unknown Joseon Dynasty, ca.1869

National Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

Yi Haeung was King Gojong 's father who wears a crimson robe with the ceremonial hat adorned with five vertical gold lines down the front of the crown-the full ceremonial dress worn by Joseon courtiers when attending court audiences or rites of the highest order. The face has been executed in numerous small, thin brush strokes to bring out the texture and fullness of the skin, which has a degree of detail and vividness that one would expect to find under a microscope.
