The artwork "Gate II" is part of a large series of paintings created by Alex Mylona in the 1990s and 2000s, in which the artist attempts to formulate her vital relationship with the world and nature, to touch the secret of existence, motherhood and erotic union. The figures are rendered in vivid, brilliant colours while the subjects acquire a symbolic dimension and the artist emphasises the timeless and universal character of each of them. In the majority of the compositions, which belong to the "Woman-Birth-Earth" section, the connection, the catalytic role of woman and her primordial relationship with the earth in the cycle of life: from birth to death and rebirth, is highlighted. The monumental female forms and curved, abstract shapes impose their rhythm of development on the pictorial space, while the majority of the artworks are in direct correspondence with personal experiences, mental and emotional states.
