The image of St. Catherine's belonged to Leo Tolstoy's great-great-grandmother, Tatiana G. Gorchakova (1711 (?) -1781), née Princess Mortkina. From 1761 onwards she was a nun at the Kiev -Florovsky Ascension Convent (named Athanasius), where she died in October 1781.
