For this work, Maillol received an order to create a monument for the French literary master Henri Barbusse, and despite completing the prototype, the plan was canceled. Afterward, the artist Maillol himself appended the name "The River." This nude female statue, which is said to express the form of a lady lying down amidst the violent flow of the times, is renowned as the representative work from Maillol's final years.
