Tsuru Aoki may have been the first Asian actress to receive top billing in American cinema. Aoki immigrated to the United States from Japan in 1903. She began staring in silent films, and made her screen debut in The Oath of Tsuru San (1913). She retired from acting in 1924, after appearing in over 40 films.
