Welcome to Mosul

Mahmoud Shubbar 2019

Al-Ghad Radio
Mosul, Iraq

We use signs to see the road, as an indicator of order and the well-being of infrastructure in modern cities. Yet these traffic signs have undergone systemic destruction to change the identity of the city. Daesh wished to instil a feeling in ordinary people that this destruction is permanent and will continue, by changing "Welcome to Mosul " to phrases that are in line with their awful ideology. The artist has reclaimed the road signs of Mosul to show that the occupation of the city has reached its end and has personalised the welcome sign to show that people can now come peacefully to Mosul, is spite of the bullet traces on its body.
