TELUS built its generative AI platform, Fuel iX™, on Google Cloud to give its team members a choice of curated AI models, like Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini on Vertex AI, inspiring engineering excellence and enterprise-wide productivity.
Getting a model as powerful as Anthropic's Claude on Vertex AI is a win-win that makes life so much easier. We get a model that excels at tool calling on a comprehensive platform that integrates with our core Google Cloud workloads like GKE and Cloud Run — that's the magic.
Justin Watts
Distinguished Engineer, TELUS
TELUS operates around a simple but important goal: to unleash the power of technology to deliver the best solutions to its global customers at home, in the workplace and on the go.
When generative AI first emerged, TELUS saw a monumental opportunity to empower its diverse global workforce of over 100,000 team members with safe and secure AI access. The challenge wasn't simply whether to adopt AI, but to build a long-term strategy that could evolve with the rapidly changing technology while maintaining the data privacy, control, and customer trust TELUS is known for.
Instead of committing to a single AI model, TELUS built a proprietary in-house platform, now known as Fuel iX , that acts as a gateway where TELUS employees can select the best model for any given task — from generating content and summarizing reports to helping engineers with complex coding and analyzing data.
TELUS chose a flexible design that allows users to choose from 40+ leading AI models and vendors on a single, secure interface. Every time a model gets updated or changed, it is instantly and securely available to all users without the friction of new procurement processes or complex IT projects. This emphasis on flexibility and openness is why 90% of AI model traffic runs through Vertex AI, with Fuel iX connecting to models such as Anthropic's Claude and Gemini to support operations for TELUS and other organizations.
Many team members access Fuel iX through intuitive chatbot interfaces seamlessly integrated into platforms they already use, such as Google Chat or Slack. They simply converse with the AI as they would with a colleague, asking questions to troubleshoot IT issues, confirm project timelines, or generate meeting summaries. By embedding Fuel iX directly into the tools teams already rely on, TELUS dramatically accelerated adoption, empowering more team members to harness AI's transformative potential.
"TELUS is such a large organization with so many facets that no matter what question you may have, the answer is probably somewhere," says Justin Watts, Distinguished Engineer at TELUS. "Fuel iX encourages people to search for knowledge and build off of what's already available, leading to better results for both team members and customers."
Fuel iX was so successful internally that TELUS made it available to customers as well. Last year, Fuel iX powered TELUS' Customer Support Tool, which became the first gen AI tool in the world to be internationally certified in Privacy by Design , reflecting TELUS' commitment to building AI solutions that prioritize data protection and user trust from the ground up. Fuel iX now powers thousands of use cases with 100 billion tokens a month, enabling over 13,000 custom AI solutions developed by team members across all departments.
A key component to building Fuel iX was gaining access to hundreds of curated AI models through Vertex AI Model Garden — including Google's Gemini models, third-party models like Anthropic's Claude, and many others. This open approach gives users the freedom to choose whatever models best suit their needs while maintaining enterprise-grade security and governance.
Watts praises Anthropic's Claude models for their tool calling capabilities, particularly their parallel tool calling. "We're a system of integrations at TELUS," says Watts. "We constantly need Fuel iX to retrieve information and operate across systems. The Claude family of models excels at judging relevance and finding the right answer for any query."
We believe in giving our teams access to the most effective tools and models for innovation. Building on Vertex AI's open and flexible platform ensures we can deliver on that promise.
Justin Watts
Distinguished Engineer, TELUS
Claude's proficiency at intelligently selecting and using the right tool – whether searching documentation, accessing Jira, or analyzing code in GitHub – has been transformative for TELUS.
"The Claude family of models on Vertex AI is really exceptional when it comes to tool calling. Whether we add a hundred new tools or a thousand, it excels at picking the right one at the right time. This has been particularly powerful for parallel and multi-tool calling compound queries – that's where the magic happens."
For instance, after enabling Claude to search the internet, Fuel iX was able to provide much more accurate information about things like weather, current events, and enterprise documentation overnight. "The quality of our results just went through the roof because we gave Claude a tool and Claude was able to recognize when that tool would be useful," explains Watts.
Claude also helps developers produce more effective code. "We initially thought generative AI would have the biggest impact on marketers and creatives, but it's been instrumental in increasing productivity and reducing toil for our engineering, development, and coding teams as well," says Watts. Today, TELUS' engineering teams are now shipping code 30% faster, removing bottlenecks such as development, planning, and resource allocation. This process creates a feedback loop where Fuel iX creates the code and developers, designers, and product managers refine it through conversation.
This, Watts explained, has shifted the definition of a "builder" from someone who knows how to code to someone who knows "what good looks like." This has empowered designers, product managers, and others to work far more efficiently and write code based on what they want to do without worrying about the underlying programming language, contributing to product development in entirely new ways.
Watts also praises Gemini for its latency. Gemini Flash provides TELUS with fast, slick experiences that make it especially popular for external use cases. Many users at TELUS also take advantage of Gemini Deep Research to deliver comprehensive reports on topics with citable sources. "By connecting it to Google Drive, email, and the internet, Gemini is uniquely positioned to complete complex research tasks," says Watts. "The load it takes off of our team members is tremendous."
Fuel iX's dynamic, user-friendly environment, powered by the flexibility of Vertex AI and the capabilities of models like Claude and Gemini, has created limitless innovation potential.
For Watts, the open-source foundation of Fuel iX is key to its success. "I love open source and community building. We want people to explore the best models and take what they need to deliver the best results for their use case."
Looking ahead, TELUS envisions Fuel iX enabling seamless collaboration across the global organization, empowering team members to solve complex challenges and deliver exceptional customer experiences. With over 13,000 custom AI solutions already deployed and growing, TELUS is proving that large organizations can embrace transformative technology while maintaining their commitment to privacy, security, and responsible innovation.
