To find more information at a glance in Chat, you can use Compact mode.
Comfortable (Default)
Compact
- Sender and recipient message bubbles are on opposite sides.
- Narrower message bubbles.
- More space in the left bar, conversation list, and Home.
- Sender and recipient message bubbles are on the same side.
- Wider message bubbles.
- Padding in the left bar, conversation list, and Home.
Adjust density settings on web & standalone app
When you adjust density settings for chat.google.com :
- Adjustments apply to the Chat standalone app .
- Adjustments don’t apply to Chat in Gmail.
To change the density settings:
- On your computer, open Google Chat .
- At the top right, click Settings.
- Under “Density,” select Compactor Comfortable.

When you change the density settings in Gmail:
- Changes apply to both Gmail and Chat in Gmail.
- Changes don’t apply to Chat when you access it through:
To change the density settings:

- At the top right, click Settings.
- In the settings side panel, under “Density,” select Default, Comfortable, or Compact.
Tip:Both “Default” and “Comfortable” options for Chat in Gmail have the same layout for Chat density.
