Turn text customization on or off in Search campaigns

You can turn text customization on or off during campaign creation, or after a campaign’s already been created in Google Ads. This article provides instructions to update text customization.

Important: The instructions below reflect the new opt-in experience within AI Max. View the instructions for legacy automatically created assets settings or learn how to upgrade to text customization in AI Max.

Turn on text customization for an existing campaign

Text customization is available under the "Asset optimization" panel in AI Max.

  1. Go to Campaigns in the CampaignsmenuCampaigns Icon.
  2. Select the Settingstab on top, then select the campaign that you want to edit.
  3. Select AI Max.
  4. Enable AI Max by toggling "Optimize your campaigns with AI Max" on.
  5. Under the "Asset optimization" panel, select the "Text customization" checkbox to enable the setting.
  6. Select Save.

Turn on text customization during campaign creation

  1. Go to Campaigns in the CampaignsmenuCampaigns Icon.
  2. Select the plus button.
  3. Select New Campaign.
  4. When you reach the "Campaign settings" page during campaign creation, scroll down to the "AI Max" panel and toggle "Optimize your campaign with AI Max" on.
  5. Under the "Asset optimization" panel, select the "Text customization" checkbox to enable the setting.
  6. Select Nextand follow the instructions to create a new Search campaign .

Turn off text customization

Follow these steps to opt-out of automatically created assets:

  1. Go to Campaigns in the CampaignsmenuCampaigns Icon.
  2. Select the "Settings" tab on top, then select the checkbox next to the campaigns that you want to edit.
  3. Select AI Max.
  4. Navigate to the "Asset optimization" panel and deselect the "Text customization" checkbox.
  5. Select Save.
Note: Disabling text customization may impact your other AI Max settings.
  • When you disable text customization, assets generated by the setting will be reported as "Removed" and no longer serve.
  • If the Final URL expansion setting is enabled for your campaign, disabling text customization will turn off the Final URL expansion setting as well.

Remove individual Google customized text assets

Follow these steps if you have concerns about an individual asset and would like to remove it:

  1. Go to Ads in the CampaignsmenuCampaigns Icon.
  2. Find the responsive search ad you would like to edit.
  3. Select View assets detailsunder the ad’s name.
  4. Hover over the status icon next to the asset you'd like to remove. 
  5. Select Remove.
  6. You’ll be asked to acknowledge that the removal of the asset will permanently remove it.
  7. Select Confirm.

Legacy automatically created assets instructions

Note: Starting May 27, 2025, automatically created assets will begin upgrading into AI Max in Search campaigns settings as "text customization". To turn on text customization, you'll need to use the feature in AI Max. After you disable the legacy Automatically Created Assets feature, you won't be able to enable it again.

Turn on automatically created assets for an existing campaign

Note: This setting will begin upgrading into AI Max settings as “Text customization” starting on May 26, 2025. You may need to reference the new opt-in experience within AI Max above to enable it.

  1. Go to Campaigns in the CampaignsmenuCampaigns Icon.
  2. Select the Settingstab on top, then select the checkbox next to the campaign that you want to edit.
  3. Select Edit, then select Change automatically created assets settingsfrom the drop-down.
  4. Select the button next to "On".
  5. Select Turn on, then click Apply.

Turn on automatically created assets during campaign creation

Note: This setting will begin upgrading into AI Max settings as “Text customization” starting on May 26, 2025. You may need to reference the new opt-in experience within AI Max above to enable it.

  1. Go to Campaigns in the CampaignsmenuCampaigns Icon.
  2. Select the plus button.
  3. Select New Campaign.
  4. When you reach the "Campaign settings" page during campaign creation, scroll down to "Automatically created assets".
  5. Select the button next to "On".
  6. Select Turn on, then click Next.

Turn on automatically created assets for multiple campaigns

Note: This setting will begin upgrading into AI Max settings as “Text customization” starting on May 26, 2025. You may need to reference the new opt-in experience within AI Max above to enable it.

  1. Go to Campaigns in the CampaignsmenuCampaigns Icon.
  2. Select the Settingstab on top, then select the checkboxes next to the campaigns that you want to edit.
  3. Select Edit, then select Change automatically created assets settingsfrom the drop-down.
  4. Select the button next to "On".
  5. Select Turn on, then click Apply.

Turn off automatically created assets

Note: This setting will begin upgrading into AI Max settings as “Text customization” starting on May 26, 2025. If you turn off the legacy Automatically Created Assets feature, you will need to opt back in through the new experience within AI Max.

Follow these steps to opt-out of automatically created assets:

  1. Go to Campaigns in the CampaignsmenuCampaigns Icon.
  2. Select the Settingstab on top, then select the checkbox next to the campaigns that you want to edit.
  3. Select Edit, then select Change automatically created assets settingsfrom the drop-down.
  4. Select the radio button next to "Off: Use only assets I provide directly for my ads".
  5. (Optional) Select a reason for which you are disabling the automatically created assets.
  6. Select Apply.
    • When you disable automatically created assets, they'll be reported as "Removed" and no longer serve.
