Fix problems with SafeSearch

Sometimes, your SafeSearch setting can be set to "Filter" and locked by someone who controls your account, device, or internet search.

You can check if your SafeSearch is locked . If it's locked, at the top right, you get a lock.

Tip:If your SafeSearch isn’t locked, sign in to your Google Account. This saves your SafeSearch settings.

Here are some reasons why you can't change your SafeSearch settings:

• Your device or internet has locked SafeSearch.
  • SafeSearch can be built-in to:
    • Public Wi-Fi.
    • Family safety settings .
    • Antivirus programs. These can change your SafeSearch setting. Ask your Internet company or network administrator for more info.
• Your parent or guardian could've locked SafeSearch.
  • If your account or device is managed with Family Link, they can change your settings.
  • Ask your parent or guardian about your account settings.
• Your school or organization could've locked SafeSearch.
  • If you have a Google Workspace for Education account, your school administrator sets SafeSearch settings.
  • Ask your school or organization administrator for help.
• Your internet browser's safety setting could've locked SafeSearch.
  • These can use URL parameters, like safe=active , to force a setting to filter, blur, or off.
  • Check your address bar, browser settings, and extensions.

SafeSearch tries to filter out inappropriate content, like adult content, from showing up in your search results. While no filter is 100% accurate, turning this setting on helps you avoid inappropriate content when you search.

The SafeSearch setting isn’t designed to filter explicit content that has significant artistic, educational, historical, documentary, or scientific value.
