Get notifications for new email

Waiting for an important email you don’t want to miss? Set up notifications in Gmail so you’ll know as soon as it arrives.

Set up notifications

On Android devices

Note: If you use multiple accounts in the Gmail app, you need to change this setting for each account.

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. At the top, tap Menu Settings.
  3. Select your account and scroll to Notifications.
  4. Tap Inbox notificationsand select your notification settings.
  5. (Optional) To change notification settings for certain labels in your inbox:
    1. Tap Manage labelstap a label, such as Important.
    2. Tap Sync messages Last 30 daysor All. If you don't synchronize messages, you can't turn on notifications for that label.
    3. Choose the notification settings for that label.
    4. Repeat steps for any other labels you want to get notifications for.

    Note: Your Android device has other notification settings that are separate from the Gmail app.

    On Apple iOS devices

    Note: If you use multiple accounts in the Gmail app, you need to change this setting for each account.

    1. Open the Gmail app.
    2. At the top, tap Menu  Settings.
    3. Tap your account.
    4. In the Notificationssection, tap All new emails.
    5. When you see a notification on your device, swipe it to the left to Reply or Archive.

    On the web

    1. Open Gmail .
    2. At the top right, click Settings  See all settings.
    3. Scroll down to Desktop notificationsand select New mail notifications onor Important mail notifications on(if you use Priority Inbox).
    4. Click Save Changes.

    Note: Notifications appear on Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari when you're signed in to Gmail and have it open.

    Turn notification sounds on or off

    On Android devices

    1. Open the Gmail app.
    2. At the top left, tap MenuSettings .
    3. Select your account.
    4. Under “Notifications,'' tap Notification sounds.
    5. Under “Email” or "Chat and spaces," tap Notification sound Sound.
    6. Choose the notification sound you want or tap Noneto turn off sound.
    7. To turn off notification sounds, tap None.

    On Apple iOS devices

    1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app.
    2. At the top left, tap MenuSettings.
    3. To change your notification, under "Notifications:"
      • Email: Tap Email notifications Notification sounds.
      • Chat and Spaces:Tap Chat notifications Notification sounds.
      • When sounds are on, the name of the sound displays.
    4. Choose the notification sound you want to use.
    5. Tap Noneto turn off sound.

    On the web

    1. Open Gmail .
    2. At the top right, click Settings See all settings.
    3. Scroll to “Desktop notifications.”
    4. Click New mail notifications onor Important mail notifications on.
    5. Next to "Mail notification sounds, "select a sound from the list.
    6. To turn off email notification sounds, select None.
    7. At the bottom of the pageclick Save changes.
