You can browse with AI Mode side-by-side to chat about your open tabs or files within a side panel or full tab view in Chrome.
Before you begin
Important:AI Mode in Chrome isn't available to everyone or on every device at this time. This feature is gradually coming to people outside the US and to non-English languages, so it might not be available to you right now.
To use this feature, make sure you’re:
- Signed in to Chrome .
- Not browsing in Incognito mode.
Start a thread from the New Tab page
- On your computer, open Chrome.
- Open a New Tab page.
- On the right of the search box, select AI Mode
.
- Or, on your keyboard, press Tab+ Enter.
- On the left of the search box, select
. You can:
- Add recent tabs
- Upload an image or file
- Apply tools, like:
- Create Images
- Deep Search
- Choose a model for your question
- To select from history, select View your AI Mode history.
- When you enter a question, you’ll be directed to the AI Mode results page.
Tips:
- To expand the AI Mode panel into a full tab, close the link you opened.
- When you select a link from a full page search, it automatically opens in the panel and adds that tab to your follow-up question.
- While you’re on AI Mode panel, below the “Ask anything” text box, select
- From the menu list, you can:
- Find most recent tabs to add to your search:Find all tabs that are currently opened in the window.
- Show more:Find more tabs to add to your search.
- Add images:Add images to your search.
- Add file:Attach files to your search.
- Create images:Describe the image you want to create.
- Deep search:Research anything.
Tips:
- From the toolbar of the AI Mode panel, you can:
- Search history or thread:Select AI Mode history

- Create a new thread:Select Create
.
- Search history or thread:Select AI Mode history
- Internal Chrome URLs, Gemini chats, or certain workspaces subject to controls will not work with AI Mode side-by-side.
About AI Mode side-by-side data privacy
To make it easier to chat about tabs and files, with storage and privacy:
- The storage time for temporary data, like screenshots, Lens selections, and PDF captures stays available during your session and won’t be saved.
- To help with revisiting conversations days or weeks later, the titles and URLs of tabs added to a thread are saved for a specific number of months. Even if the original tabs are closed or the temporary screenshots have expired, those sources can still be referenced.
- All raw data from both public and private URLs are treated with strict confidentiality. This data isn’t used for:
- Human review
- Personalize the experience
- Ad target
- Training AI models
