Get started with Gemini in Docs

  1. On your computer, open a document from Google Docs .
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini.
  3. In the side panel, select a suggested prompt or write your own prompt. Select a suggestion
    1. Select from the list of suggestions.
      • To get more options, select More suggestions.
    2. At the bottom, in the prompt box, replace the example text with the information you want.
    3. Press Enter.

  4. Optional: To remove your history, click More optionsMoreand then Clear history.

Tip:To avoid losing your history, insert generated output in the document. You lose your conversation history when:

  • You refresh your browser.
  • You close and reopen the document.
  • Your computer goes offline.

Things to ask Gemini in Docs

    Summarize text with Gemini
    1. On your computer, open a document from Google Docs .
    2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini.
      • When you open a document that has text, on the side panel, you’ll find a summary of your document.
      • To get a summary of your document, ask Gemini.
        • Examples:
          • “Summarize this document in 3 bullet points.”
          • “Explain this document like I'm 5 years old.”
        • To summarize a specific section of your document:
          1. Highlight the text.
          2. On the side panel, ask Gemini to summarize your text.
    3. You can also:
      • Add the text to your document:Click Insert.
      • Find a different version:Click Retry.
      • Send feedback about the suggested text:Click Good suggestionor Bad suggestion.
    Create documents or new text
    1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs .
    2. At the bottom bar, in the prompt field, enter a prompt that describes the document you want to create.
    3. Optional:
    4. Click Submit.
    5. Optional: To review sources used, select Source.
    Edit or refine content

    You can use Gemini to:

    • Rewrite specific sections.
    • Adjust the tone of your writing.
    • Substantiate your arguments with facts.
      • Gemini can pull stats, evidence, and citations directly from your Google Drive, Gmail, or the web into your document.
    1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs .
    2. Select the text you want to rewrite.
    3. On the floating bar, click Refine.
    4. To refine the content how you want, you can:
      • Select:
      • Enter a prompt:
        • To target a specific section, enter a prompt like “Add evidence to my Research section.”
        • To review the whole document, you can enter a prompt like “Suggest places where I can better substantiate my argument.”
    5. Review the suggested changes.
      • To apply the changes, click Accept all.
      • To reject the changes, click Reject all.
    Tip:If you paste new content to an existing doc and want to improve the text, select Match writing style.
    Create images with Gemini

    You can ask Gemini to generate images in Docs.

    1. On your computer, open a document from Google Docs .
    2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini.
    3. On the side panel, create your own prompt.
      • Example:“Create an image of a dog with glasses.”
    4. On the image that you like, you can hover over to:
      • Insert an image:Click Insert .
      • Find similar images:Click Generate more .
    5. You can also:
      • Find more images:At the bottom, click Generate more .
      • Change your prompt:Click Edit promptedit.
      • Send feedback about the generated images:At the bottom, click Good suggestionor Bad suggestion.
    Reference other files to edit or refine content

    You can ask Gemini to use specific files to write, edit, or refine content. For example: “Update the project timeline based on the latest updates from our meeting notes doc.”

    1. At the bottom bar, click Sourcesand then Add from Driveor other location.
      • Or, you can type “@” and then search and select from the menu.
    2. Select one or more files.
    3. Click Add.

      Get answers from the web

      Important:To get answers from the web, make sure to include phrases like “Use Google Search” or “Using web search” in your prompt.

      • “Write a paragraph describing the weather today in Mountain View, California using web search.”

      • “Help me write a paragraph explaining if lightning can strike the same place twice using only information from the web.

        Use a Gem
        1. On your computer, at the top right, click Ask Gemini.
        2. On the right, in the side panel, click Gems.
        3. Click the Gem you want to use.
        4. Select a custom or premade Gem.
          • To start a conversation with the Gem, type a question or prompt at the bottom.
        Tip:To create a Gem, go to gemini.google.com . You can then use your Gem in the Gemini app and Gemini side panel. Learn how to use Gems in Gemini Apps .

        Give feedback on generated output

        Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request. Because feedback may be human readable, please do not submit data that contains personal, confidential, or sensitive information.

        If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback. Your feedback can help improve AI-assisted Workspace features and broader Google efforts in AI.

        1. In the bottom bar, click Leave feedback.
          • Or, in the side panel, click Good responseor Bad response.
        2. Select the data you want to share. This includes prompts and outputs.
        3. Enter additional feedback.
        4. Click Submit.
