Chamber of Giants - Side wall

Giulio Romano

Palazzo Te
Mantova, Italy

The episode represents the myth of the "Gigantomachia", the Giants fight against Jupiter, as narrated by Ovid. Compared to the text of Ovid , where the Giants are described as some sort of monster with thousands of arms, here, they are represented as men. According with Guthmüller these differences can be attributed to the text used by Giulio Romano , which was not the original but a translation of Nicholas of Agostini, who had reported an error of interpretation of the text already present.
