In 1956 Fred and Eileen Whitaker traveled throughout Europe, sketching and taking two-and three-dimensional (for spatial depth) photos that served as inspiration for later paintings. Eileen particularly loved Spain , its people, and its architecture. She completed this painting in their “cellar studio” after they had moved to La Jolla, California, in 1965, and before they built a more spacious freestanding studio adjacent to their home. The painting won awards at a competitive exhibition at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco and at an American Watercolor Society annual exhibition.
