MORE OR LESS FUN
The entire party is thought to have joined the excursion to the monastery in Sohag. Henrik de Maré and Wilhelm von Geijer, who took the photograph , took this opportunity to have a bit of fun. It would appear that the donkey driver was in on the joke too. Ida Uhse describes the day. Her experience was not as jolly:“Sohag, 4th of Jan. Arrived at 11am and immediately went for a ride to visit two monasteries. We rode for three hours and on the way back I lost my beautiful watch, the one I received as a gift from the Countess last Christmas. I was devastated to have lost it, as I loved the watch so dearly. The Countess promised to give me a new watch and asked me not to let this loss ruin the excursion for me. But I am still quite sad, as the watch was very dear to me. Today we arrived at Akhmim , where we shall stay overnight, an important city with close to 10,000 inhabitants, great cotton and shawl weaving mills, bazaars and a very popular weekly market.
