Mt. Penglai (Mountain of Immortals)

Yokoyama Taikan 1948

Adachi Museum of Art
Yasugi, Shimane, Japan

Beautiful and gorgeous buildings stand in a row on a cape where pine trees grow thick, and the grand Mt. Fuji stands over the sea clouds. “Mt.Penglai (mountain of immortals)”, a Chinese ideal world where mountain hermits live, is one of the subjects many painters have favored since olden days. This work expresses Japan as an enchanted land and shows Taikan’s distinctive character. In 1948, Hakuju-kai, a Japanese art organization, was established by senior painters of the Japanese art world, and at the same time, its first exhibition was held. This work was produced for that exhibition. Taikan was over 80 years old, but his imagination did not weaken.
