Vessel with human form

Artist unknown 2500–1800 BCE

Neues Museum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin
Berlin, Germany

Round-bellied ceramic jar with two vertical handles. Such jars are identified as anthropomorphic vessels or face vases because of their sculptural decoration suggesting a human face and body. Multiple such vessels were found in the early Bronze Age houses of Troy, where they clearly belonged to the everyday tableware of the upper classes.
