To catch up on important discussions in a space in Google Chat, you can use Gemini to summarize unread messages.
Feature availability
- This feature is available as part of Gemini Alpha.
- Your administrator controls access to Gemini Alpha. If you can’t find these features, your administrator may not have Alpha features enabled for your organization .
- This feature is also available as part of our early access testing program, Google Workspace Experiments .
Summarize unread messages in a conversation
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail .
- Choose a conversation with unread messages that you want to summarize.
- Click Summarize unread.
- You can find a summary list of the recent messages that you haven’t read under the "Recent discussions" section.
Tip:For messages with many unread messages, summaries will automatically expand without clicking.

- Click Close summary.
Give feedback about Gemini conversation summaries
Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.
If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback. Your feedback can help improve AI-assisted Workspace features and broader Google efforts in AI.
Because feedback may be human readable, do not submit data that contains personal, confidential, or sensitive information.
- At the top right of the generated output, select Good summaryor Bad summary.
- In the pop-up window, you can select the data you want to share along with your feedback, with additional context and output. If you don’t want to share certain data, you can uncheck it.
- If you select Bad summary: To select the issue and enter additional feedback, select Next.
- Select Submit.
