Since going online in January 2015, our data center has provided jobs for the local workforce and invested in community initiatives like wetlands restoration, precision irrigation projects, and increased digital access across the area.

As an area security manager for Google Data Centers, Pia Quiroz is responsible for the physical security of our operations throughout Latin America, including at our Quilicura, Chile, data center. She loves many aspects of her role. She says, “I feel very lucky to be part of the amazing team that makes sure that the information of all our users, including our own information, is safe and secure [because of our] access to cutting-edge technology.”

Pia also loves that through Google Data Centers, she has had the opportunity to work with people from different countries and cultures. She is also grateful that she has been able to help make a difference in the community. She has participated in programs that have expanded opportunities at local schools, helped plant trees for an urban forest in Santiago, Chile, and led activities for the improvement of housing for the elderly. She reflects on how these projects created opportunities for the region. “People with less access to technology [get to] see and experience what a big tech company can do to improve the lives of many different people.”

“In the past few years, I’ve seen how Chile is becoming a globalized country. The data center employs people from different countries, which creates a really nice culture of learning, embracing differences and diversity to complement local knowledge, creating a really rich work environment.”

Kareen Elizabeth Araneda grew up in Chile and loves her beautiful country and its beaches, forests, and mountains. They are all near Quilicura, Chile, which is home to one of our Google data centers and is on the outskirts of Santiago. It is also where Kareen has worked since 2017, currently serving as a data center technician.

A love for the beauty of her home country has given her an appreciation for travel to other places in the world, most recently Japan and the United States. And during her tenure at Google Data Centers, she has had the opportunity to participate in a bungee assignment, which is a short-term development opportunity open to Googlers to learn a new skill and role. During the assignment she worked as a technical program manager and is grateful for the opportunity she had to learn from exceptionally smart people.

Additionally, Kareen not only loves the beauty of her country and the world. She also values the opportunities Google provides to make her community even more lovely. She helped plant trees for the Urban Forest to help reduce the pollution in Santiago. She also has helped assist with graduations for mothers and girls from underinvested communities to ensure they have an opportunity to learn something meaningful and grow.

“[During my bungee assignment as a technical program manager] I learned about perseverance, having different perspectives, thinking positively, and that sometimes [it] is hard to make decisions. Sometimes you have to be clear, concise, and demanding in order to get results if you are leading a project.”

“[At Google] I enjoy promoting the sharing of knowledge, and I really love when I can share what I know, [and I appreciate] being heard and being included, and knowing that I can bring something valuable to any discussion.”

Mario Vazquez

Googler, Data Center Services Manager at Quilicura Data Center

Mario Vazquez was born in Uruguay but has lived on every continent on Earth, with the exception of Antarctica. He once hitchhiked across Latin America and eventually found himself in the United States. There he served in the Marine Corps, earned a business administration degree, and worked in a mining career that brought him to all corners of the planet.

Settled (for now) in Chile at Google, Mario is a regional data center services manager for Latin America, working out of Santiago, Chile, near our Quilicura location. He leads a multidisciplinary team that is tasked with building our Latin American data centers safely. He says, “I often feel a strong sense of purpose and accomplishment, knowing that my work will have a positive impact on many people once the data center is brought online.”

He’s also proud of the direct and indirect employment Google Data Centers have brought to the community, especially when a data center is under construction. And he is equally proud of the Urban Forest that Google has helped create. A former indigenous site that fell into neglect and disrepair, the Urban Forest was brought back to life by Google and local Chilean employees who planted trees and invested time helping with upkeep and landscaping to create a beautiful urban oasis.

“To say that one works at Google is often tantamount [to saying one works at] a dream workplace. I am living the dream!” Mario says.

“Working at Google has turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience where I feel challenged, supported, and inspired to make a difference. It’s a place where I can personally and professionally grow, while enjoying a fulfilling and balanced work-life equilibrium.”
