The Design

Designing the world’s tallest tower is no small feat. The building’s Y-shaped ground plan— inspired by the desert flower Hymenocallis—maximizes both structural integrity and views of the Arabian gulf. At the center lies a “buttressed core,” a 6-sided pillar made of reinforced concrete. The floors are arranged in a helical (spiral) formation, providing stability in the face of strong desert winds. The tower’s award-winning design is an homage to Islamic architecture.

So what’s happening on the 164 floors of the tallest tower in the world? A mixture of work and play. Inside the Burj Khalifa there are a range of corporate offices, suites and luxury apartments. Amenities include the world’s highest swimming pool and the only hotel created by renowned fashion designer Giorgio Armani. Those who dare to dine in the air can visit the world’s highest restaurant, At.mosphere, located on the 122nd floor, 442 metres (1,450 ft) above sea level.
