UPDATE DEC 2022 - -3 StarsWell, these worked for a while but before long, they started letting me down. Regular restarts became a fact of life in order to keep them working. I don't have any proof of this but based on the feedback of others, I suspect this is an Apple issue. I had multiple devices in my home that are hubs (including a HomePod), and one plug was less than 4' away from an AppleTV and would still disconnect regularly.I gave up and switched to Alexa and haven't looked back since. In short, can't recommend this because I can't recommend HomeKit.ORIGINAL REVIEWThere seem to be a lot of negative reviews on this product, and it's pretty clear the way this product is being presented is what is confusing. This is a Belkin device and, as such, WORKS PERFECTLY if you know which one to get for what you want to achieve. Also, Belkin has a long history of supporting Apple products; it appears they are pivoting Wemo to support Apple products ONLY. Allow me to clarify the differences between the versions of this device.WEMO SMART PLUG V3 & WEMO MINI SMART PLUG - both discontinued - uses wi-fi - supports Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit - requires the use of the Wemo app to set it upLong and short, if you want to use anything besides Apple, you MUST purchase this one, but it's discontinued.WEMO SMART PLUG V4 - current version - uses Thread and Bluetooth - DOES NOT use wi-fi - DOES NOT require an app to set it up, just an iPhoneThis plug is quick and easy to set up (I set up mine in under 2 minutes), but it ONLY works with iOS devices and needs an iPhone specifically to set it up using NFC. Also, I have not seen the power outage issues some others have reported. I had one today and the smart plug recovered with no intervention on my part.Important note: IT DOES NOT HAVE OR USE WI-FI. If you're trying to set up a V4 with the app and with wi-fi, it won't work because it doesn't have it.WHAT IS THREAD?Thread is an open-source wireless mesh networking protocol. It was specifically developed for managing IoT products like this smart plug. While Amazon, Google, and many others are members of the group that administers it, Apple is the first to implement it widely.The Apple HomePod and Apple TV have built-in support to act as a home hub. iPads can also be set up to be home hubs. What this means is to control one of these devices when not in range of it, you need to have a HomePod, Apple TV, or a configured iPad THAT IS in range of it. Otherwise, when your phone is in Bluetooth range of the device, it will use Bluetooth to control it.Its advantages are quick and easy connections, the ability of the devices to build their own mesh network not dependent on wi-fi, the network is self-healing, it has fast response times, it doesn't require as much power, and it has far better range. In other words, it is ideally suited for IoT devices.SUMMARYAre you an iOS user intending to use HomeKit ONLY? Then get the V4 plug; it's great.Are you not an iOS user or an iOS user who wants to use something other than HomeKit? You want the older version, but truthfully, I'd probably look at another brand as they are discontinued. It's pretty clear that Belkin has hitched Wemo's wagon to being HomeKit only as all of the latest versions of their products are HomeKit ONLY.
