Aureliano wounded

Geraert Peemans 1667

The Cathedral of Segovia
Segovia, Spain

This tapestry belongs to the series " Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra." An exchange of letters between Aurelian, urging Zenobia and her army to retreat, and Zenobia citing Cleopatra and her example of dying in debt to the tyrant, depicts the prelude to the final battle of Palmyra. This description contextualizes the scene ultimately captured by Peemans in the tapestry, draped on the left wall of the Chapter House. A total of ten soldiers divided into three fighting groups are immortalized in a highly dramatic image in which the emperor appears to be falling from his horse .
