These small compasses were mainly used to take small measurements including working out distances on maps .

They have 2 equally straight pieces called "legs," which are joined at their upper end to an axis around which they rotate. Joined to one of the legs by an axis is an arc, which is cut out lengthways and can be attached to the other leg with a screw inserted into a hole.
