In 1861 the American Civil War began. More than 50 Chinese Americans fought, on both sides, in the Civil War. Of those who served, only a handful received recognition of their service in the form of pension, benefits, or citizenship. Photo: Joseph Pierce served during the Civil War and attained the rank of corporal and is thought to be the highest rank of any Chinese American in the Union Army.
