Gold foil circular disc II

A gold foil form consisting of a circlet on which two half-moon plates are fitted, The plates are decorated with five symmetrical nail perforations, and a light stippled effect. The form exhibits a triangular gap between the plates, and a large aperture on the other side. The form displays nail perforations and is decorated on both sides around the apertures with a herringbone pattern. The surface is burnished with evidence of abrasion. Originating from the archaeological site of Mapungubwe Hill, associated with the sceptre burial dating from CE 1250 to CE 1290. The archaeological landscape of Mapungubwe in South Africa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. The Mapungubwe Collection is stewarded under the University of Pretoria , where the archaeological collection is on public exhibition for the purposes of research and education.
