Born in the southern town of Ponce , Puerto Rican painter Miguel Pou y Becerra depicted scenes of everyday life, with special emphasis on color and light. In this work, Pou shows the horse -drawn carriages that could be found his hometown's main plaza until the 1960s. The view is leavened with the flowering of red flamboyant trees , typical to the island's landscape, which frame the view of the cathedral's dome.
