Mourning or memorial rings are a type of ring that represents close ties with somebody. They are often enhanced with a symbol such as a weeping willow, an inscription stating the name and date of death of the deceased, or even a strand of the person’s hair. A memorial ring made of bone and featuring a coffin and two skeletons, for example, was created to mark the execution of Charles I of England in 1649. What are called memento mori rings, depicting the Grim Reaper or a skeleton, remind us of the transience of all being.
