Black and white portrait of the Welsh poet, Sarah Jane Rees, known by her bardic name as Cranogwen. Rees lived a varied life, as a mariner, teacher, poet, public speaker, activist, and editor of the famed periodical, 'Y Frythones'.

The photograph was taken by Welsh photographer John Thomas, known for his particular focus on Welsh sites, landscapes, and celebrities. Thomas' collection of over three thousand of his negatives was bought by Sir O M Edwards, used to illustrate Edwards' Welsh periodical 'Cymru'. They now form part of the photographic collection of the National Library of Wales .
