Munch in the hallway of 53 Am Strom. Here he has used the by-now typical effect of transparancy in a symbolic manner: the paintings are seen clearly through the figure of the artist. Such a deliberately symbolic representation may have been done with publicity in mind. Showing the artist among his works was in fashion, and Munch had been asked to send pictures of himself at work to several magzines.
