There is no doubt that Lourens was an ambitious man. He already regarded himself as a painter at the tender age of sixteen. Just look at this portrait, where he sits before an easel with a drawing pen in his hand. The story goes that his contemporaries marvelled at how someone could walk through the city streets carrying his own face under his arm.
