Settee - Bed

Unknown c.1760-1770 -

National Palace of Sintra
Sintra, Portugal

Settee-extendable bed , made of walnut , in the King José style, with red silk damask upholstery of great decorative richness, displaying remarkable technique in the carving of the walnut, a wood that is highly appreciated in the manufacture of luxury furniture . The settee’s slender arms contrast with the dynamism of the composition of the curved back, in which the pierced splat and neck are both carved with a decoration of highly shaped asymmetrical motifs.
This large-sized piece of seating furniture has the peculiarity that, when opened, it is transformed into a bed, thanks to its extendable structure, which conceals a second cushion. In this way, it combines a functional component with the characteristics of display furniture.
