German immigrant and entrepreneur Gustav Shultz built a curio shop and tunnel to permit visitors to see one of La Jolla's sea caves. In 1902, he hired workers to dig a 144-step tunnel from his seaside shop down into the cave using picks and shovels. It is said that Schultz charged visitors a small fee to enter, making it an early form of tourism in La Jolla. A water wagon is making its delivery to the store.
