Dunkleosteus showed the first signs of change: jaws made of small, sharp, toothlike bony plates. Evolving jaws was their free pass and nothing could stop them anymore: placoderms such as Dunkleosteus started the vertebrates’ great diversification. Those undisputed aquatic predators were about to begin the conquest of all environments and would soon reach dry land.
