In the early modern period, exploratory voyages and transnational trade relations sparked interest in the clothing of different cultures. Beginning in 1560, the first costume books were published, a genre that would soon become extremely popular. Here, the aim was to represent pictorially the clothing of different peoples and classes, allowing the reader to experience new worlds by way of their inhabitants.
