Born in Ohio, Craig traveled up the Missouri River to Fort Benton, Montana Territory in 1865, spending four years with various Indian tribes. He opened a portrait studio in Zanesville , Ohio, then studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1881, on his way to Colorado Springs, Craig became the first trained artist to paint in Taos , New Mexico. He settled in Colorado Springs for the next 50 years taking many trips to southern Colorado where many Texas cowboys worked on ranches. Reaugh-Bugbee Acquisition Fund
