View of Mt. Kunō (Important Cultural Property)

Tsubaki Chinzan 1837

Yamatane Museum of Art
Tokyo, Japan

Mt. Kunô in eastern Shizuoka city was the first gravesite of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu . This painting depicts a scene of the approach to the Tôshôgû Shrine located at the top of the mountain . While renowned for his bird and flower paintings, Chinzan also created true-view sketches from his actual observation of the places he visited, as did his teacher Watanabe Kazan . This painting was created from sketches taken ten years prior upon a visit to Mt. Kunô. The trees and hill are drawn in literati fashion, while the shadowing applied to bamboo fence and stone wall gives a sense of three-dimensionality to the work. The gentle color tones with their translucent feel are reminiscent of Chinzan's bird and flower painting style.
