Foto: AMH Roman Iron Age

Hamburg Archaeological Museum
Hamburg, Germany

This approximately 30-year-old male, who was buried in a Roman cooking kettle, took his possessions with him as grave goods. The bronze kettle contained weapons (sword, shield, lance and knife), three pairs of spurs, belt and brooch pins as part of his costume, buckles and clasps from shoes , two bronze Roman wine ladles, and two drinking horns. The furnishings of this Germanic warrior indicate his high rank. The objects of foreign Provenance testify to contacts with the Roman Empire . The “Herr von Putensen” probably served as an officer in the Roman army.
