Sergei Pankejeff, a Russian aristocrat, was a patient of Sigmund Freud's who had a recurring dream about wolves in a tree . Freud called him Wolf Man and wrote up the case in 'From the History of an Infantile Neurosis' (1914). Pankejeff painted several versions of this scene.
