A presentation of recent and new installations by Yasmin Smith. Yasmin Smith (b. 1984, Sydney) creates ceramic installations through a combination of field research, community collaboration and studio work. She considers the history of different environments by sourcing materials in situ, creating sculptural forms and ash glazes that reveal unique chemical traces. In recent years the artist has produced several large-scale works that reveal the history, ecology and geology of specific sites. Smith’s innovative work demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of contemporary ecological concerns through unique artistic methodologies.
The exhibition will feature five important large-scale works that are connected by their shared investigations of waterways, river systems and deep geological time. A centrepiece of the display is the major wall-based installation Seine River Basin (2019), commissioned for Cosmopolis #2: rethinking the human, Centre Pompidou, Paris and acquired for the MCA Collection in 2020. Displayed alongside it will be a selection of significant recent works, including Open Vase Central Leader Widow Maker (2017), Drowned River Valley (2018) and Forest (2022). Elements of Smith’s latest work in development, focusing on the industrialised river systems of Manchester, will also be on display.
