Capivari River

A tributary of the Tietê River, this watercourse originates in the interior of the state of São Paulo and crosses the city of the same name. The river's name comes from the large regional population of the semi-aquatic mammal, the capybara, still seen there to date.

Rare species

Calçada do Lorena

The Calçada do Lorena was built in the 18th century by Bernardo José de Lorena in order to connect São Paulo and Santos. The road, a great trip for trail lovers, has a viewpoint from which you can enjoy the magnificent Baixada Santista.

The rise of independence

At the time, the Calçada do Lorena was a great engineering feat. So much so that it was the first paved road in South America. This was the road that Emperor Dom Pedro I used to get to São Paulo, where he gave his famous cry of independence.

The monument Padrão do Lorena was only rediscovered in 1922 by Washington Luís. It is a memorial in honor of José de Lorena and marks the original location of the road. It is adorned with beautiful tiles depicting scenes from the empire.
