It works reliably, and you can set URL pattern match rules as long as they're not too specific. If you want to set different rules within a pattern match, you can do so by changing the order of the rules. Very sophisticated! While doing research on a search site, it is sometimes difficult to find an open tab because it has been moved to a tab group. It would be helpful to easily pause the extension as needed.

I have tried many rules based tab grouping extensions and this is by far the best one. Thank you for making this :)

pattern matching is amazing - it even supports paths and not only domains with wildcards. the only use case i could not work around is having wildcards in the middle of the domain (example.*.*.*.domain.com)
Yep, that's unfortunately not possble in Match Patterns: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Add-ons/WebExtensions/Match_patterns That said, I'm planning to support regular expression patterns for advanced users, but I'm not yet sure when I'll come around to implementing that.

Super useful. I'm also a tab junkie and this is so helpful for my work. It would be great if the closed tab groups could disappear from the browser's bookmark bar as it's creating its own super long list of tab groups (those open and those which were closed some time ago. I don't need to see them). Also would it be possible to create a tab group that auto-groups tabs that are not under a specific rule so as to keep the groups neater? For Google Docs it would be useful to prevent duplicate tab... Show more
Hey Valentin. Thanks for the kind words. :) Regarding the bookmark bar: Yes, this is a known problem and removing tab groups from there is unfortunately not possible currently as Chrome does not expose an interface to meddle with them. All you can do for now is to hide tab groups from the bookmark bar entirely by right clicking the bar and unchecking the "Show Tab Groups" entry. And yes, it's possible to create a fallback group for the rest of your tabs. Just create a tab group configuration with a rule that just says "*" (without the quotes). This will match every URL, so you'll have to move that group configuration to the end of the list to prevent it from taking precedence over others.

Excellent! Would be nice to implement a feature that auto collapses inactive groups (in de same window) and when selecting another group it activates the last active tab in that group. Also I would love to see a black and white icon theme.

very practical! it would be great if the grouping could be sorted according to rules, so that I can know where the tags I want are right away

Update: Auto-Collapse Tab Groups integrates seamlessly with Auto-Group Tabs! Very responsive and attentive Developer who deserves recognition. No doubt this extension will only improve with time. 5 Stars all the way! As a tab junkie who likes to work with dozens of tabs open, this extension has simply revolutionized the way I work! I have used several such extensions in the past but this has been the most stable and useful. Kudos to the developer for making the source available and creating ... Show more
I generally assume that tabs still consume memory, yes. As far as I know, Chrome on Desktop did not discard tabs on its own until very recently when the "Energy Saver" mode was introduced (see here: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/12929150?hl=en#zippy=%2Cturn-energy-saver-on-or-off). But this does not affect collapsed tab groups. Regarding minimizing of unfocused tab groups: I made an extension that does this, but not after a delay or anything, it just ensures that only the tab group with the currently active tab is expanded: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/tab-gruppen-automatisch-z/dppnkkdjjbpjcjijkjbhhbhpnmjjhppl

This extension is phenomenal. There is so much care and superb design in this extension, even the re-ordering of group rules. And the button to jump directly to the rules from a group! The Strict/Merge options... such critical features! This is a real developer, with their code on GitHub, and not some weird nameless faceless "someone" which I keep seeing behind popular extensions (those others make me concerned they will rug-pull to an advertising extension, wouldn't be the first time). This ... Show more
