mCloudTech: Optimizing industrial operations and advancing sustainability with AI

Google Cloud Results
  •  Accelerates asset and environment anomaly detection and identification

  • Improves asset OpEx efficiency by over 40%

  • Tracks carbon use and savings at the asset level to promote sustainability and identify actions that reduce carbon intensity

mCloudTech’s AssetCare helps its clients improve asset OpEx efficiency by over 40% with Google Cloud, including Vertex AI.

Tapping into world-class AI capabilities from Google Cloud

From the smallest pipe leaks that result in lost energy to dings that compromise stealth features in fighter planes, the experts at mCloudTech.AI know what it takes to improve operational efficiency. Since 2016, the company has helped organizations around the world improve their business and enhance sustainability.

Across aerospace, aviation, F1 racing, the energy sector, and heavy industry, those in the know rely on mCloudTech to combine the latest technologies with tried-and-true mathematical and scientific principles to drive efficiency.

“Until recently, technology solutions for monitoring and modeling complex industrial processes often required immense compute power and a lot of capital. Access was mostly limited to a privileged few in large organizations and academic research,” says Russ McMeekin, Co-founder and CEO, mCloudTech.

mCloudTech wanted to democratize access to advanced analytics and viewed the latest and greatest AI technologies as the way to do so.

Google Cloud gives us world-class AI capabilities we didn’t have before. Now we can quickly solve our clients’ toughest operational challenges.

After encountering limitations with its prior cloud services provider, mCloudTech migrated to Google Cloud with the help of several partners. mCloudTech chose Google Cloud on account of its highly scalable, easily managed, global, and secure infrastructure, as well as its leading AI capabilities.

Zencore, a Google Cloud partner, set up a Kubernetes environment using Terraform to assist with mCloudTech’s migration. The Zencore team also helped with environment upgrades, expansion for a production environment in Google Cloud’s Saudi Arabia region, and a key application migration.

Another partner, Foresite Cybersecurity, aided mCloudTech with clients’ stringent cloud computing assessment and security requirements.

Boosting sustainable energy production with AI

The mCloudTech team uses Vertex AI to power many of its solutions. For wind energy clients, mCloudTech developed over 60 machine learning models using Vertex AI to account for diverse factors that negatively and positively impact wind turbine operations.

For example, mCloudTech will assess 50 wind turbines based on the flow of the wind and use AI to identify which turbines’ blades are misaligned and then identify the causes. Wind turbines have local control systems that point the blades, and mCloudTech’s systems assess whether the controls are working correctly. Vertex AI helps the mCloudTech platform quickly adapt to changes in conditions, identify equipment degradations, and boost wind energy output through best-in-class AI.

We use analytics to establish common patterns and anomalies with AI. As a result, our clients can inspect issues faster with fewer people, cutting costs and carbon footprint.

Helping energy firms go greener while improving efficiency

For oil and gas clients, mCloudTech experts draw on prior computer vision experience in the avionics and aerospace industries. This know-how helps the company develop solutions that converge infrared, optical, and computer vision AI with imagery and data from Google Earth Engine and methane-detecting satellites. mCloudTech’s solutions enable clients to rapidly identify leaks in pipes and valves that otherwise might only be physically inspected once a year.

Further, many companies track carbon at the facility or company level, but mCloudTech believes that they need to work in the manufacturing systems to track carbon at the lowest possible level in order to drive improvements. With Google Cloud partner Zazmic, mCloudTech is building a new carbon tracking database, and is developing AI agents to simplify the database’s integration with ERPs such as SAP and ensure carbon traceability for accurate accounting.

Thanks to Google Cloud, computer vision technology is now cheaper, faster, and more accurate. We can deploy lower cost cameras everywhere to optimize facilities and improve asset integrity.

Driving impressive asset OpEx efficiency gains

mCloudTech evaluated a number of foundation models for some of its newer facilities and asset management solution initiatives. Gemini emerged as the best option among more than a half dozen alternatives.

mCloudTech’s solution provides clients with chatbots and conversational analytics powered by Gemini. It’s supported by BigQuery so clients can glean insights from large volumes of unstructured data from document archives plus many other formerly siloed data sources.

Using Gemini and mCloudTech’s computer vision algorithms, the solution allows facility managers to easily set up asset monitoring, such as by automatically ingesting images of assets each hour. The solution can notify the facility management team when items are out of place, doors are left open, or if equipment produces unusual levels of heat—an early warning sign of equipment failure.

“More intelligent asset management allows our clients to extend the equipment lifecycle and save money,” says McMeekin.

Bitstrapped, a Google Cloud partner, helped mCloudTech build out some of its AI-driven conversational analytics and computer vision applications.

mCloudTech has helped clients achieve asset OpEx efficiency gains of more than 40%.

McMeekin praises all four of the key partners that have helped mCloudTech establish and scale its business using Google Cloud technologies.

“We appreciate our partners’ specialized skills and knowledge. They help us keep up with all the latest innovations from Google Cloud so that we can better serve our clients.”
