Redfin launched as a real estate brokerage in 2006, with the mission to redefine real estate in the customer’s favor. Unlike traditional real estate brokerages, Redfin real estate agents are paid based on customer satisfaction, not just commission, so the agent’s and client’s interests are aligned. At launch, Redfin “hand-stitched” its maps together for its website at launch, but as a a technology-powered real estate brokerage, they quickly realized they needed to scale the solution.

Redfin developed location-centric website and mobile app, using Google Maps Platform to help buyers find houses in specific locations. Redfin also allows users to search for houses based on places-of-interest, such as a park or a landmark. They can also find houses for sale in specific neighborhoods by drawing a polygon on a map and then searching within that area. When it's time for users to tour properties, Redfin also helps users estimate the time it takes to drive between homes.
