Turn Apps Script on or off for users

Supported for all Google Workspace, Cloud Identity, and G Suite editions

As an administrator, you can turn Google Apps Script on or off for people in your organization. Users who have Apps Script turned on can use it to create, edit, and execute Apps Script scripts. By default, Apps Script is turned on for all users in your organization.

How it works

The on/off controls for Apps Script, Drive and Docs, and Google Workspace Marketplace interact in the following ways:

  • When Apps Script is off:
    • Users can’t create or edit scripts.
    • Script and trigger executions are blocked. Blocked scripts include web apps, custom functions, and macros recorded in Sheets. Blocked trigger executions include simple triggers and installable triggers .
    • In AppSheet , Apps Script scripts called using “ Call a script ” don’t run.
    • In Google Ads Script , script executions, previews, and scheduled scripts are blocked.
    • In Looker Studio , Community connectors don’t fetch data. Users see an error in charts that use a community connector.
    • Users can still install and run Google Workspace Marketplace apps and add-ons created with Apps Script, such as Google Workspace Add-ons and Editor Add-ons, if allowed by Marketplace user install settings .
  • When Apps Script is off for only some users, scripts owned by those users can still be accessed, edited, and run by other users who have Apps Script turned on and access to the script.
  • When Apps Script is onbut Drive and Docs is off , users can’t open Apps Script to view, create, or edit scripts. Existing scripts will still execute.
