Platelet Enriched Plasma and Stem Cell Thearpy
Platelet Enriched Plasma and Stem Cell Thearpy are are ususally used in animals for joint and tendon healing. These products are taken from the aniamls own body, purified with special techniques, and then placed back into the original patient's body.
Platelet-enrich plasma (Abbreviation: PRP) is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. As a concentrated source of autologous platelets, PRP contains (and releases through degranulation) several different growth factors and other cytokines that stimulate healing of bone and soft tissue.
The stem cells we use for Stem Cell Thearpy does not come from fetuses. We have learned that those stem cells which are derived from fetuses cause teratomas (an encapsulated tumor with tissue or organ components ) to form which are unpredictable. The stem cells we use for Stem Cell Thearpy actually come from the patient's fat. Not only are there more stem cells found in fat, we know how they will work for our purposes, and that they do not cause teratomas. Currently, veterinary insurance will cover the cost of stem cell thearpy for most dogs with degenerative joint disease and many of the results are favorable.
The Process
Platelet-enrich plasma is made by first taking blood from the patient. It is then spun down in a special centrifuge to seperate the platelets from the whole blood. The platelets are then gathered using special techniques and then is either reinjected back in to the animal's blood stream, into a joint, or into a tendon to promote healing.
Stem Cell Thearpy starts with taking about 2 teaspoons of fat from the animal's body. It then under goes special processing to isolate the stem cells from the fat cells. The content is then either injected back into the patient's blood stream or is banked at a special labratory for future use.
