Spring has finally arrived, and retail is blooming with new store openings. First, Soho is getting a lesson in French chic from Isabel Marant , who just unveiled her first standalone U.S. outpost. At the corner of Broome and Greene, the slick new boutique brings to New York Marant’s unique mix of pared-down modernism and slightly naughty romance—think cropped jeans and little sweaters. Equal parts rockabilly chic and Brigitte Bardot, all you’ll need to complete the look is loads of eyeliner and a bad attitude… Since 1984, Antwerp-based Coccodrillo has been pushing the wares of the city’s locals, which just happen to include the likes of Ann Demuelemeester, Dries Van Noten and Martin Margiela. Now the Belgian institution has opened its first men’s footwear boutique, featuring all the tried-and-true classics, as well as a selection of Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent, Balmain and exclusives from Nicholas Kirkwood. These were the folks who produced Margiela’s first line of shoes, so they know a thing or two about a well-turned sole… Meanwhile, a little closer to home, roving boutique International Playground is putting down some roots on Stanton Street in the LES. Known for its pop-ups worldwide, the new store will continue fostering new talents with catchy names like Ravishing Mad, Cut-it-Out and Vibe Johansson. The space doubles as a greenhouse with a live plant wall that looks like the end of Little Shop of Horrors. We advise avoiding anything that talks… Finally, Oak is heading west for its latest venture, partnering with Seventh Heart for a pop-up boutique in San Francisco, land of bath houses and hot escorts. Opening at the end of the month, the shop will feature the new Oak line, as well as a selection of its best threads. To commemorate the occasion, the store is teaming up with weekly gay dive party and institution Tubesteak Connection to host an after-party to the sound of obscure vintage disco. We assume tight jeans, hankies and mustaches will be the dress code that night.
