Porn, Bongs and a Loom
Philadelphia artist Erin M. Riley culls lewd images from Snapchat, Tumblr, and the privacy of one’s own phone and translates them into large-scale tapestries, hand-woven on an actual loom. They feature scantily clad women, used condoms, bongs, baggies of party favors, toilet-hovering, and the occasional puke.
“These are the events and objects that are significant to me,” she says. “Tapestry allows images to be given more time, for hookups to gel, for mistakes to be thought over — it’s a way to over-analyze every detail.”
In her latest series, Year of the Porn, she goes even further, weaving scenes of lady porn — first 13 images below — that she finds on her phone after crashing in bed, screenshots at the moment of climax. She thus combines an ancient art form requiring a tremendous amount of skill with the digital age, with its focus on instant gratification.
