Beachy & Peachy: Alexander Wang Spring 2017

It’s like Alexander Wang just can’t bring himself to be overtly sexy. He gets close to it, really close, but try as he might, he switches into streetwear. At his spring show tonight, an ode to beach-going and sport-doing, he seemed to poke fun at himself by printing small images of bikini-clad swimsuit models on assorted sweatshirts and other pieces. So 80s, so meta.

But none of his own models looked like that, except for their exaggerated sun-bleached hair and virtually no make-up. Rather, at the start they wore various takes on men’s shirting, with some rose-print and lace numbers after that, followed by distressed denim, then the aforementioned bikini babe sweats.

A darker section came next — think black leather, leopard prints, flame detailing (as in classic race cars). Then more lightness: neoprene dresses, more of those beachy sweatshirts in pink and peach with the words Mind Detergent emblazoned on them. Wang finished the show with a handful of evening dresses, which amounted to what came before but with splashes of sequins. Then an after-party revealed itself in the same show space.
